CHAPTER TWO

The next day, Daniel managed to escape the hospital. He’d never been so grateful to get away without being intubated, but his discharge was only after he agreed with Jake that he could keep a close eye on his pulse ox by taking home a meter to check it regularly, and orders to control any possible swelling with medication. He was also released to the comfort of his home under strict instructions not to work for at least a week. Being without his regular partner for a full week was making Mike crazy, and by Friday, he was begging to come over. Mike had even convinced Jake and Angelo to join him, much to Daniel’s panic. He wasn’t sure he could handle being in the same room with Angelo again for more than a minute. He’d managed to avoid any uncomfortable confrontations with Angelo after that one night, being let go shortly after Angelo’s shift had ended and hiding at home ever since.

It’s not that he didn’t want to revisit their…encounter. He did. He just wasn’t sure how this was supposed to play out with their group of friends. Mike wouldn’t care, of course, but would also never let him hear the end of it, given that the annoying nurse was the one to turn Daniel’s crank. Had it been any other man, Mike probably would have shut his stupid trap, but for Angelo, Mike would be pulling out all the stops with relentless teasing. Jake, awkward as always, would probably say that he didn’t really understand relationships anyway and ignore the whole thing, which was a pity, because Mike had wanted to hook up with Jake for as long as Daniel could remember.

A knock on his door snapped him out of his reverie, and Daniel shook his head and stood, padding to the door in jeans and a soft gray tee. Standing there on his doorstep with two pizzas and a pair of six packs was Angelo, looking downright edible in skinny jeans, a band T-shirt, and a flannel button down.

“Damned hipster,” Daniel muttered, stepping aside.

Angelo laughed. “You love it, Danny boy.” He made his way inside followed closely by Jake and Mike.

“How’s it going, guys?”

Mike held up a paper bag. “Great, now that it’s boys’ night.”

“What the hell is in there?”

Mike chuckled. “Porn. Obviously.”

“Wait a minute. I didn’t realize we had pornography planned for tonight. I wouldn’t have agreed to join you all,” Jake piped up. He was carrying more beer and pushed his way past to set it on the coffee table unceremoniously.

“Oh loosen up, doc.” Mike sighed. “It’s not like you’ve never watched porn before.”

Angelo set the pizzas and beer on the coffee table too then tossed himself on the couch, sprawling out. “I seriously doubt the good doctor has seen porn before. He’s practically an angel.”

“I am not.”

“So you have watched it?” Mike asked, smirking.

Jake straightened up. “I spent the bulk of my teenage years and twenties studying and working. I didn’t spend much time doing these stupid male-bonding rituals you guys always seem to come up with.
